THE PITTSBURGH COMICON 2000 RAN
three days at the end of last month. RICOCHET GRAPHICS was there
all weekend, Friday, April 28th through Sunday, April 30th. And
we had FUN! A total of five people staffed our booth over the
three days, and we all found plenty of stuff to stay amused by
(not the least of which being each other's company)! The set-up for the event took place that Thursday, and Marcel and J. got most of the display into place and generally acted a fool within the empty Expo Mart. A wonderful surprise gift was made to Marcel by his fellow co-workers at Kinko's of a mounted oversize poster of the cover of SMOKING GUNS: ONE SHOT. It perfectly filled a spot in front of the table, and helped to declare our arrival! |
MARCEL, J. AND PAUL STAFFED the
table on Friday, and arrived early in order to get a lay of the
land. The convention hosts asked Marcel and Paul to sign a large
board with the names of all the participating artists, writers
and creators. (J. was a later addition, so they didn't have his
name...we'll fix that next year, buddy!) At noon the gates were
opened and the hall was filled with convention-goers. There was something for everyone at the COMICON -- big name artists and writers; independent publishers (like us!); PLAYMATES!!! (woo-hoo! Why were they there? Hey, who cares!?!); lots of retailers with comics and action figures and videos and knives...yeah, KNIVES. Actors and actresses from a number of movies and t.v. shows were signing autographs and taking pictures too. |

WE WERE THERE WITH THE purpose
of promoting the RICOCHET GRAPHICS website, and we gave away
free copies of ONE SHOT and sponsored a contest to that end.
Over six-hundred copies of ONE SHOT were distributed, and over
one-hundred contest entries were collected! Saturday was our biggest and busiest day. Marcel, J. Tracy and Paul staffed the table. (Paul actually managed to distribute copies of his own comic as well, enterprising guy!) Aided and abetted by Tracy (aka THE MEGAPHONE -- wow, this girl is loud!), we collected the majority of our entries this day. We were also assisted in giving out comics by our friend Eddie P. and his brother and friends. Thanks guys -- go to the videotape! |
TONS OF PEOPLE CAME TO the COMICON
on Saturday to see WWF wrestler Mick Foley, aka Mankind/Cactus
Jack, and the opprtunistic crack staff of RICOCHET took full
advantage of the moment, passing out comics amongst the line
of autograph seekers. Marcel sought out autographs of a different kind, collecting a signature from Playmate Jennifer LaVoi, and making fast friends with scream queen Tina Krause. J. got pictures with actress Alexandra Tydings (aka APHRODITE on XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS). Tracy got pictures taken with several notables, including a member of GWAR, WOLVERINE and SPACE GHOST (her personal favorite). Paul brought a date, so he was fine regardless! |

SUNDAY SAW MARCEL, J., TRACY AND
JASON manning the table, and more fun being had by all. Tracy
proved so popular she began passing out autographed copies of
drawings of her own meta-powered alter ego, REDGLARE, THE FIRECRACKER OF LIBERTY! J.
made enough of an impression that people asked to take pictures
of HIM! And oh yeah, that Marcel guy who created SMOKING GUNS?
Several people asked for his autograph too! Also in attendance down at the other end of the hall were Barry Linck and his fiance, Chrissie. Barry, the Grand Poo-Bah of our local comics scene (having set-up at all of the prior COMICONs) was his usual upbeat self, and was selling all sorts of goodies (some of which were X-rated, and we ain't talking mutants either). |
Other stuff of mention...Our Number
One Fan, Becky, and her guy Jason (aka the Banditt!)...Marcel's
cute new friend from out of town, Carla (hubba hubba!)...the
ladies of SEQUENTIAL
TART, who made us feel important...artists Michael Kaluta,
Ron Frenz, Pat Olliffe, Brian Michael Bendis and George Perez,
all of whom were extremely gracious...our "neighbors"
along Artists' Alley, the LABYRINTH guys Dave and Russ, "Noppie"
aka Steven Noppenberger, Susan and Josh, the staff of LOCKER PUBLICATIONS, notably Brenda and Kelly
(thanks for the hugs!)...J.'s spider harness (ask him!)...Dinner
at HOOTERS and our waitress Lisa...and of course our hosts at
the COMICON. Rest assured, we'll be back again next year. Try and keep us away! |
