I'd actually planned
for a while to write a story based on the responses I've received
from the TEN MAGIC BELLS question. (Thanks again, by the way!)
And a couple weeks ago I got some information about a short story
contest that I just knew I had to submit an entry to. And as
fate would have it, this gave
me the perfect reason to actually compose that BELLS story, which
I did over the last five days. All sixteen pages of it. Single spaced. Yeah, that was a muscle I hadn't flexed in a while, and boy am I tired. But it's a good kind of tired. Well, the cool part is that I can now send off my entry a good two-and-a-half weeks before the deadline for submissions. The uncool (hot?) part is that I can't post the story for at LEAST a couple months. Why you may ask? Because I actually took the time to read the complete rules and guidelines, and nestled in the fine print was a clause that barred entrants from publishing their story in any form INCLUDING ONLINE until well past the date of their ruling. Which kinda sucks, 'cause I really wanted you guys and gals to read it. I have you, in large measure, to thank for it. So, in wanting to provide you all with continued entertainment, I finished composing a very short story (this one's less than two printed pages) I'd started writing years ago. Technically, I re-composed it, since I'd only worked out the plot and the final stanza the last time I touched it. COUNT TO TEN started as an exercise I began in order to bring something to a creative writing class I'd intended to take. (Never did. I'm such a wuss.) This story has just been begging to be finished for years, and now it's got its chance too. I hope you like it. Let me know. And no, the protagonist isn't patterned after anyone directly. Although there are a couple people I wouldn't mind watching bounce. (You'll get it once you've read the story.) |
And now...COUNT TO TEN! |
